Thierry Robert 's interview
'All stones are fascinating! They are all unique. Whether they are an emerald, a ruby, colored sapphires, grenats and amethysts, they all have in their ways sublimated Boucheron’s history!'
Your job is a true calling, tell us the day you knew you wanted to work with stones?
I was ten years old, and I had been observing my dad’s work for several years now. A true love for stones began to grow inside me. I knew they were not mere toys but true nature’s gifts. After finishing my studies, I decided to fully embrace my father’s work, and that is when stones became both my passion and my job! After having observed my mentor, I had the chance to work alongside him for 10 years in Boucheron, and to carry on the Robert family succession, my father having held that position for 50 years. We have even celebrated the 90th ‘Robert’ family line anniversary in the gemology department of Boucheron last year.
What is your ‘typical’ day, or is there really a ‘typical’ day at all in your area of expertise?
There is no ‘typical’ day, because each day carries its own set of suprises. Indeed, I learnt how to become available to suppliers and clients at any given time, with no appointments, because curiousity in our job is very important!
Could you tell us about your most precious memory or travel around stones?
A 25 carats ruby. It was love at first sight. When I saw it and touched it for the first time, it brought out a feeling of warmth and emotion, characteristics I’m always looking for before buying a stone. This ruby was a wonderful example of perfection and beauty. However, it was not for sale. It was only after five long years of negotiation that the owner finally allowed me to buy it from him. Before buying it, he made me swear that the future owner of the stone would have to be a connoisseur, because this beauty was too perfect to be really appreciated. This ruby was sold and its new owner is a true precious stone lover.
Do you like working with a stone in particular?
All stones are fascinating! They are all unique. Whether they are an emerald, a ruby, colored sapphires, grenats and amethysts, they all have in their ways sublimated Boucheron’s history! For example, we find some of them in the Zebra ring on which a 3 carats sapphire is set, or even in the Pythie ring with a 15 carats tsavorite, as well as the Hathi ring which carries a 3 carats violet sapphire.
Could you tell us about your future projects for Boucheron ?
Continue to amaze the world by being a leader in our field of expertise, like Frédéric Boucheron did in 1863, where he decided to move in 26 Place Vendôme, the sunniest place of the quartier, in order to sublimate the stones and gold.
